Position Details:

The Career Advisor faculty position supports the Burnett School of Medicine’s Office of Student Affairs by providing personalized career advising, coaching, and programming for medical students. This role will assist students with residency preparation, career exploration, CV/resume development, interview skills, and specialty decision-making. The advisor will collaborate with faculty, staff, and external partners to enhance career readiness and ensure students have access to the resources needed for successful professional development.

Duties and Essential Job Functions:

  1. Provide one-on-one and group advising sessions to medical students on career development topics including residency preparation, specialty selection, application strategies, interview preparation, and professional networking.
  2. Develop and deliver lectures, workshops, panels, and presentations on career-related topics tailored to medical students.
  3. Collaborate with Student Affairs leadership, Student Physician Director & Coaches, and external partners to support residency and fellowship preparation programs.
  4. Assist students in creating and refining CVs, personal statements, and other professional documents required for residency applications.
  5. Promote career advising resources and services through outreach and engagement within the Burnett School of Medicine.
  6. Support collection and reporting of residency match outcomes and career placement data.
  7. Stay informed on national trends and best practices in medical student career advising and graduate medical education.
  8. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
  • Familiarity with residency application processes, ERAS, NRMP, and specialty-specific advising.
  • Must qualify for Assistant Professor rank or above at the Burnett School of Medicine

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Previous Graduate Medical Education/Residency Leadership

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of medical education and residency preparation processes.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to present to groups.
  • Skill in advising and coaching students through complex decision-making.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and external partners.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and career management tools.
  • Ability to manage projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):

  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
  • Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.

Work Environment:

  • This is a part-time, student-facing position within the Office of Student Affairs that will require both virtual/online and on campus presence.
  • Work is primarily indoors and sedentary, with flexibility in scheduling to accommodate student needs.
  • No harmful environmental conditions are associated with this position.
  • The role may require occasional evening or weekend availability for student programs or events.
