Job Summary:

The Upward Bound Teacher is responsible for providing TCU Upward Bound Summer Program with classroom instruction in one of the following subjects: All levels of English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Foreign Language, Art, Business, Dance, Physical Education, Communications, Theater, Coding, and STEM Related Classes. This position will implement an approved curriculum assisting students in gaining the skills necessary to pass mandated state achievement tests and attain a high school diploma.
*UB Teachers must be available to teach Monday- Thursday for the entire Six-Week Summer Program, starting June 20th – July 27th.*

Duties & Essential Job Functions:

1. Facilitates classroom and small group instruction by implementing a challenging curriculum that assists participants in gaining the necessary skills necessary to advance to the next grade level and/or graduate high school and enter and be successful in educational programs at the postsecondary level, and ultimately the attainment of a baccalaureate degree.
2. Assesses the progress of each Upward Bound participant by administering appropriate tests, assessments, and other measures of achievement.
3. Provides feedback to Upward Bound Director regarding the unique and individual needs of each participant and attends staff development/in-service training.
4. Supports Upward Bound participants outside of the classroom by attending Upward Bound special programs.
5. Provides regular and timely submission of student attendance, grades, and reports.
6. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in the educational field in which they are hired.
• 2 years of teaching experience, preferably at the secondary level
• Experience working with students from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds.

Preferred Education & Experience:

• Master’s degree.
• 1 year of experience in pedagogy including curriculum development and implementation.

Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:

• None

Preferred Licensure, Certification, and/or Specialized Training:

• Valid Texas Teacher certification.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Skill in computer operations needed for curriculum implementation, lesson plan development and required program documentation.
• Ability and understanding to work effectively with members of diverse student population.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Ability to be flexible in teaching approach.
• Ability to teach multiple level courses within respected field of study.
• Ability to maintain student confidentiality.
• Ability to maintain professional and ethical conduct at all levels of interaction with program participants.
• Knowledge of barriers to secondary and postsecondary education faced by low income and first-generation students.
• Professional or personal experiences in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting Participants.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):

• Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
• Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
• Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
• Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
• Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.

Work Environment:

• Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
• This role is an on-campus, in-person position.
• There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.
• The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
