Assistant Professor of Counseling

Position Details:

This full-time faculty position is on-campus and in-person. The Counseling program at Texas Christian University (TCU) invites applications for appointment as a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Counseling, beginning in August 2027. The successful candidate will teach and advise students in the clinical mental health counseling specialization both at the master's and doctoral levels. The successful candidate for this position will have strong potential for or a demonstrated track record of research excellence focused broadly on counselor development, multicultural counseling, and clinical mental health counseling outcomes. We are especially interested in scholars pursuing research in areas such as addictions, abnormal human behavior, military veteran support, play therapy, LGBTQIA+ communities, and/or interpersonal neurobiology. We expect the successful candidate to have the potential for, or a strong record of, securing external grants to support their research program at a level sufficient to ensure the impact of their work.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include teaching, research/scholarship, advising, professional development, and service commensurate with the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will align all coursework to CACREP standards. The successful candidate will:
● Teach counseling master’s and doctoral-level courses, potentially including addictions, abnormal behavior, assessment, research and program evaluation, play therapy, and/or other content as needed.
● Assist in program services such as program coordination and/or CACREP accreditation.
● Advise, mentor, and chair master's- and doctoral-level students, including serving on orals/comprehensive examination, dissertation committees, and eventually chairing dissertations
● Maintain a robust line of research and publication
● Have the potential for or a strong record of securing external grants to support their program of research
● Collaborate with counseling faculty on student recruitment, assessment, and retention; program evaluation; and support for the TCU community counseling training centers (Frog Care Centers).
● Provide service to the college, department, university, and counseling-related professional organizations.

Required Qualifications:
● Earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Counselor Education and Supervision from a CACREP-accredited program. ABD candidates will be considered but must complete degree requirements by appointment date.
● Established research agenda as evidenced by publications or other recognized scholarly outlets
● Eligible for LPC in Texas.
● Ability to teach courses across the CACREP curriculum
● Ability to teach, mentor, and conduct research that reflects awareness of and responsiveness to individual differences among students and clients.

Preferred Qualifications:
● Experience teaching doctoral-level classes
● Three or more years of clinical experience in mental health or in school-based mental health services
● Experience with program coordination and/or CACREP accreditation process
● Supervision credentials (i.e., LPC-S in Texas, NBCC Approved Clinical Supervisor)
● Experience securing external funding and grant writing.
● Scholarship and experience with intervention studies or other quantitative methodologies.

The Counseling program takes a collaborative approach to counseling, viewing clients as active participants in their own growth and understanding rather than passive recipients of a diagnostic process.The Counseling program is housed in the Department of Counseling, Societal Change, and Inquiry. Programs in this department engage students looking to positively impact society in several ways, including addressing mental health through counseling, investigating the relationships between curriculum in schools and society, and working with youth in organizations connected to education.
