Position Details:

This full-time faculty position is on-campus and in-person.

Required Qualifications:
o Bachelor’s degree and three or more years of technical direction experience required.
o M.A. or M.F.A. in Theatre Design, Theatre Technology, Technical Direction, or other related area with professional technical director expertise and experience teaching in higher education preferred.

Duties and Essential Job Functions:
o Teach courses in Stagecraft (including labs) each semester.
o Work closely with the Scenic Studio Supervisor to oversee all theatre scenic components for an annual academic year schedule of six to eight theatre productions.
o Facilitate communication between the various production areas.
o Maintain three on-campus theatres in conjunction with the Scenic Studio Supervisor.
o Use CAD software to facilitate communication between designers and the production studios.
o Generate and manage production and design schedules and deadlines.
o Coordinate strikes with the Scenic Studio Supervisor.
o Oversee production budgets for the Scenic and Paint Studios.
o Serve as a consultant and resource for the areas of lighting, sound, and costumes.
o Provide on-site production support for University Theatre performances with assistance from other faculty and staff.
o Develop, implement, and monitor policies to ensure a safe work environment backstage and within the stage areas.
o Attend required production meetings and faculty/staff meetings.
o Perform other related duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
o Strong scenery construction and installation skills, including carpentry and welding.
o Expertise in automation and rigging.
o Experience in supply purchasing.
o Demonstrated collegiality and ability/willingness to collaborate effectively with colleagues.
o Ability to effectively mentor undergraduate students.
o Knowledge of and adherence to ADA and OSHA compliance.
o Competency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, and the ability to learn all required business systems.
o Competency in customer service and communication skills.
o Competency in supervision.
o Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
o Ability to work independently and as a team member.
o Intermediate to advanced skills with industry-standard software, such as Vectorworks and AutoCAD.
o Ability to troubleshoot problems in a prompt and efficient manner.
o Ability to work varying hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):
o Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms, and other printed materials and information.
o Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
o Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
o Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
o Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 50 lbs.

Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:
o Valid Driver’s License.
o Must be insurable under the university motor vehicle requirements.
o Satisfactory results from a post-offer physical examination.

Work Environment:
o Work is mostly indoors, not sedentary, and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
o Must be able to support productions, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
o This role is an on-campus, in-person position.
o The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.

The Department of Theatre offers four BFA degrees dedicated to conservatory-style training inside a liberal arts education, as well as a BA degree in Theatre. Theatre TCU produces 6-8 productions each academic year, welcomes numerous guest artists, collaborates regularly with professional theatres in the area, and offers unique opportunities that support student professional and educational development. Theatre TCU alumni are performers, choreographers, artistic directors, arts administrators, educators, program developers, studio owners, designers, and more. With a mission to develop educated artists and technicians prepared to become ethical professionals and leaders in the global theatre community, the Department of Theatre is committed to preparing students to enter the professional theatre market and beyond.

School/College Description:

The TCU College of Fine Arts is home to six academic units: the School of Art, the School for Classical & Contemporary Dance, the School of Music, the Department of Design, the Department of Fashion Merchandising, and the Department of Theatre. The college is comprised of approximately 1000 students and offers 33 undergraduate degree programs and 24 advanced degree programs to prepare the next generation of creative leaders in the arts. Students in the College of Fine Arts study with renowned professors and guest artists, annually present more than 350 public performances and display art, design, and research in juried exhibitions and competitions.
