Job Summary:

The Carpenter is responsible for supporting construction projects by building and renovating structures and furniture.

Duties & Essential Job Functions:

1. Prepares work to be accomplished by interpreting blueprints, sketches, or building plans; assembling materials and identifying finished product dimensions.
2. Prepares layout by following carpentry procedures for fabrication of counters, cabinet, benches, partitions, floors, doors and building framework and trim, using rule, framing square and calipers.
3. Constructs, repairs and installs structure by marking cutting and assembly lines on materials; shaping materials to measurements; assembling and fastening cut and shaped materials; using carpenter's hand tools, power tools and woodworking equipment.
4. Ensures construction quality by verifying trueness of structure with plumb bob, carpenter's level and other measurements.
5. Maintains supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
6. Complies with federal, state and local building codes by adhering to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
7. Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations.
8. Ensures operation of tools and equipment used in the job by completing preventive maintenance requirement; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
9. Maintains continuity among work teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities and continuing needs.
10. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• 3 years of woodworking experience.

Preferred Education & Experience:

• None

Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:

• Valid Driver's License.
• Must be insurable under the university motor vehicle requirements.
• Satisfactory results from a post-offer physical examination.

Preferred Licensure, Certification, and/or Specialized Training:

• None

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Knowledge of carpentry and wood finishing techniques.
• Knowledge of troubleshooting techniques.
• Knowledge of basic hand tools and related equipment.
• Knowledge of customer service techniques.
• Knowledge of basic record keeping techniques.
• Skill to read and interpret blueprints, drawing and sketches.
• Ability to verbally communicate technical information.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):

• Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
• Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
• Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
• Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling, climbing ladders and stairs, and prolonged sitting.
• Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 40 lbs.

Work Environment:

• Work is indoors/outdoors and not sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
• May be exposed to hazardous materials and noxious fumes on occasion.
• The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
• This role is an on campus, in-person position.
