The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry in the Louise Dilworth Davis College of Science & Engineering at Texas Christian University (TCU) in Fort Worth, TX invites applicants for an Instructor I position in Chemistry. Candidate must possess a PhD by August 2026 in Chemistry or a related field. The successful candidate will be expected to teach first-year General Chemistry courses and supervise teaching assistants through associated Teaching of Chemistry courses. Specific courses will vary depending on semester, but the instructor should be prepared to teach one large-enrollment course and one small-to-medium enrollment course or four small-to-medium-enrollment courses each semester. Potential courses include:

• General Chemistry II Lab (Spring semester; at least ten 24-student lab sections and one lecture section; supervision of undergrad and grad lab TAs and lab prep)
• General Chemistry I (one 90- or 180-student section; supervision of lecture TAs)
• General Chemistry for Engineers (Fall semester; one 90-student section; supervision of lecture TAs)
• Applied General Chemistry I (Fall semester; one 30-student class; supervision of lecture TAs)
• Applied General Chemistry 2 + Lab (Spring semester; one 30-student class, two concurrent lab sections; supervision of lecture and lab TAs)

The successful candidate will have opportunities to teach summer coursework paid at institution standard rates. Expected workload for the Instructor I position is 80% teaching and 20% service (departmental, college, and/or university). One component of departmental service would be co-sponsorship of the TCU ACS-affiliate Chemistry Club, which involves occasional early evening hours. Additional service opportunities include committee work, student advising, mentorship, and student recruitment, and other related duties. Expected starting salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

Department Details:

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is the oldest PhD-granting chemistry program in north Texas and is at the forefront of TCU’s increased research activity. The department’s ten tenured faculty and two instructors maintain a robust PhD program and an extensive program of undergraduate research, while serving over 1000 undergraduates annually in introductory and advanced coursework. Department research strengths include biochemistry and organic chemistry related to health and disease, energy and materials chemistry, and physical & computational chemistry. The department maintains a “teacher-scholar model” in which undergraduates are heavily involved in research and graduate students & postdocs develop skills as research mentors and team leaders.

School/College Description:

The Louise Dilworth Davis College of Science & Engineering encompasses 9 departments (Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Environmental and Geological Sciences, Mathematics, Nutritional Sciences, Physics & Astronomy, and Psychology) as well as the Ranch Management Program, which offers both an undergraduate degree and a one-year certificate program. Davis College is also home to the Pre-Health Professions Institute, the Karyn Purvis Institute for Child Development, the Institute of Behavioral Research, the Institute for Environmental Studies, Monnig Meteorite Gallery, and the Institute for Ranch Management. Davis College is the second largest at TCU in terms of both undergraduate enrollment and number of majors. It contains a disproportionate percentage of high-achieving students, as evidenced by the fact that almost one-half of the students in the Honors College have majors in The Louise Dilworth Davis College of Science & Engineering. Research opportunities abound for undergraduates, with 46 percent of majors engaging in a substantive experience during which they work one-on-one with their faculty mentor. Davis College also has five doctoral programs and 16 master’s programs, as well as two graduate certificate programs. Davis College faculty are true teacher-scholars, for whom instruction and research are viewed as complementary activities.
