Job Summary:

The Postal Assistant (Temporary) transmits communications by distributing and dispatching mail. Work schedule varies based on time of year but is usually Monday through Friday. Some weekends may be required during August to assist with move-ins.

Duties & Essential Job Functions:

1. Distributes mail by retrieving or receiving items from post office and delivery services; opening and sorting by addressee, destination, and type; delivering items.
2. Complies with postal service and delivery service requirements by preparing outgoing mail for delivery.
3. Provides mail and parcel delivery services by selling postage at post office window, weighing packages, certifying, registering, and insuring mail for customers.
4. Complies with Federal regulations by preparing bank deposits; reconciling receipts and disbursements; preparing accompanying forms and reports.
5. Maintains post office rental boxes by renting boxes, processing rental forms and billing information.
6. Trains staff by reviewing postal regulations with staff; contributing to on-the-job training; demonstrating operation of equipment; acting as resource person.
7. Maintains records by scheduling, validating, and entering data; verifying data entry for accuracy, auditing and troubleshooting problems with address changes.
8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

• High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.
• 1 plus year of basic office, retail, or related experience.

Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:

• Valid Texas driver’s license
• Satisfactory results from a post-offer physical examination.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Knowledge of customer service techniques.
• Knowledge of accuracy with numeric skills.
• Ability to operate a computer using basic software.
• Ability to clearly communicate information.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):

• Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
• Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
• Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
• Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
• Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 65 lbs.

Work Environment:

• Work is indoors/outdoors and not sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
• This role is an on-campus, in-person position.
• There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.
• The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
