Position Details:

The Student Physician Coach will be assigned a group of students to oversee throughout their medical school curriculum and will be responsible for monitoring academic and professionalism progression, coaching students through professional identity formation, helping them navigate academic challenges, and developing them as empathetic scholars. The Student Physician Coach plays a critical role in overseeing students’ progression through the Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC), ensuring that, across the clerkships, students meet the expected milestones and learning objectives for each clerkship. The Student Physician Coach educates and tracks student professionalism, fosters professional identity formation, supports academic progress, and supports the wellness of each assigned student. Student Physician Coaches ensure comprehensive achievement of all clerkship objectives, recognize strengths, and identify areas for improvement to optimally foster professional identity development.

Duties and Essential Job Functions:

  1. Works with the Director of Student Physician Coaching to ensure long-term success with their student cohort.
  2. Tracks progression and professionalism development for their cohort of students.
  3. Collaborates with the Director of Student Physician Coaching, Clerkship Directors, and faculty preceptors to ensure optimal communication about student performance across all curricular activities.
  4. Provides guidance for their cohort of medical students, supporting their professional and personal development throughout the four-year curriculum;
  5. Regularly monitors their students’ progress and self-reflection on competency milestones, guides students in individual learning planning, and meets with their students individually and in small groups. Individual meetings occur at least quarterly with each student.
  6. Attends weekly group coaching meetings.
  7. Conferences with students in incidents of not meeting curricular and/ or professionalism expectations, provides constructive feedback, and assists students in identifying appropriate resources for self-improvement and support.
  8. Refers students to Learning Specialists, Career Advisors, Mental Health counseling, or other individuals as needed.
  9. Reviews faculty narratives of student assessment for areas of possible improved performance and provides suggestions for improvement;
  10. Encourages and supports each student as an individual by creating an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, and acceptance.
  11. Serves on School of Medicine committees as assigned;
  12. Performs additional duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • MD or DO
  • Must qualify for Assistant Professor rank or above at the Burnett School of Medicine

Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:

  • Physicians with active clinical practice must have and maintain an unrestricted license to practice medicine
  • Physicians with active clinical practice must have current ABMS (American Board of Medical Specialties) Certification in their area of chosen specialty

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Understanding of educational pedagogy as it relates to the clinical sciences
  • Experience managing professionals in a complex organization
  • Proven experience in management of multiple initiatives and multiple sites
  • Experience with LCME and/or other accrediting bodies
  • Experience working with diverse students or diverse populations

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):

  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms, and other printed materials and information.
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
  • Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.

Work Environment:

  • Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
  • There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.
  • The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
  • Traveling between multiple work sites is often necessary.
  • This role is an in-person and on-campus.

Program Coordinator Flight Experience

The Flight Experience Coordinator serves as the primary liaison between the university and its designated flight training provider(s), coordinating the academic components of the university's flight education program and assisting with securing and maintaining FAA Part 141 certification. The Associate Director Academic Support and Development supports the Director of the Pre-Health Professions Institute (PHPI) in implementing the Institute’s mission to prepare students for successful admission to and success in health professions schools. This position focuses on supporting the academic, professional, and personal development of undergraduate science students pursuing pre-health pathways. The Associate Director coordinates initiatives designed to enhance student retention and academic performance in rigorous STEM courses (particularly introductory Biology and Chemistry courses), develops programming that supports professional and personal growth, and provides individualized guidance related to professional school entrance exams (e.g., MCAT, DAT, GRE, PA-CAT). The position also contributes to the Institute’s committee letter process and teaches in the Pre-Health Professional Development course sequence.
