This full-time faculty position is on-campus and in-person. The Department of English at Texas Christian University (TCU) invites applications for a tenure-track colleague at the rank of assistant professor with expertise in rhetorics of health and medicine (RHM). As RHM is an interdisciplinary field, a successful applicant will demonstrate a foundational focus in rhetoric, composition, writing studies, or technical communication as well as a research agenda informed by some of (but not all or limited to) the following disciplines and subfields: disability studies; community literacy; Indigenous studies; science and technology studies; Black studies; global/transnational rhetorics; feminist, queer, and trans rhetorics; antiracist rhetoric and writing; medical humanities; etc.

TCU proudly follows a teacher-scholar model. Tenure line faculty have a regular 3/2 course load, and newly hired faculty receive pre-tenure course release support for research. All faculty teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, mentor undergraduate and graduate theses/dissertations, and serve on graduate student committees. The successful candidate will join a cohort of seven tenure-stream rhetoric and composition faculty and contribute to dynamic graduate programs as well as support the growth of an undergraduate major and minor in writing and rhetoric. Candidates with relevant expertise may also contribute to our department’s programs in Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies and Women and Gender Studies as well as the program in Digital Culture/Digital Analytics and other interdisciplinary initiatives. The position carries a nationally competitive salary, benefits, and internal research support.

Required qualifications: A PhD in rhetoric, composition, writing studies or a closely related field with RHM focus in hand at the time of appointment; the ability to publish high-quality scholarly research in relevant areas; and demonstrate excellent teaching at the college level. Preferred qualifications: Interest in securing external research funding; experience with curriculum development and/or program administration; strong knowledge of research methods in writing studies; and a record of working collaboratively and across the disciplines.

As the largest department in the AddRan College of Liberal Arts, the TCU Department of English is a vibrant and diverse intellectual community. We offer distinct majors and minors in the study of writing and rhetorics; literatures and cultures; and creative writing as well as an MA in English (including an Accelerated BA to MA program), a PhD in English, a PhD in Rhetoric and Composition, and a pilot postdoctoral program. We also serve as the administrative home for the programs in Women and Gender Studies and Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies. Our 35 full-time permanent faculty members are dedicated teacher-scholars and productive leaders in their fields. Named for TCU’s founders, Addison and Randolph Clark, the AddRan College of Liberal Arts is home to the core academic disciplines of the humanities and social sciences.
