Job Summary:

The Costume Technician is responsible for supporting Theatre TCU’s Costume Studio in constructing new costumes and altering rented, borrowed or stock costumes for theatre productions. The Costume Technician will also provide support to students as needed in completion of projects related to Theatre TCU productions and theatre coursework.

 

Duties & Essential Job Functions:

1. Work closely with the Costume Studio to construct and tailor costumes, make alterations, assist with fittings and/or repair of costumes, millinery, and shoes.
2. Supervise and assist students with sewing and costume construction projects.
3. Maintain a safe environment—monitor students for safe use of Costume Studio and classroom sewing machines, sergers, hemmers, and industrial irons.
4. Keep track of supplies and convey any needs to Costume Studio Manager.
5. Assist in duties for daily set-up and clean-up of the Costume Studio, dressing rooms, and classroom spaces.

 

Required Education & Experience:

• Experience working with students in an educational setting.
• Proficient in use of domestic and industrial sewing machines, sergers, blind hemmers, and industrial irons.

 

Preferred Education & Experience:

• 2 years’ experience as a pattern maker, cutter, stitcher, and tailor for theatrical costumes preferred.
• Experience in theatre performance or theatre technology.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Knowledge in theatrical costume construction, including but not limited to stitching, cutting, draping, patterning, dyeing, tailoring, and millinery.
• Skill in costume design interpretation and execution, with both professional and student designers.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):

• Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
• Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
• Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face- to-face interactions.
• Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
• Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.

 

Work Environment:

• Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
• This role is an on campus, in-person position.
• There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.
• The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
