Job Summary:

The Institute of Behavioral Research (IBR) is a national research center for evaluating and improving treatment strategies that target reductions in drug abuse, related mental health and social problems, as well as other significant public health risks—especially HIV/AIDS and other infections among at-risk populations. The IBR Data Manager is responsible for data management for projects funded as part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) HEAL (Helping to End Addiction Long-term) Initiative, launched in April 2018 to provide scientific solutions to the national opioid overdose crisis, including improved treatment strategies for pain as well as opioid use disorders (OUDs). This initiative, funded by Congress, brings new hope for people, families, and communities affected by this devastating crisis. This position is grant funded.

 

Duties & Essential Job Functions:

1. Oversees the data management unit and will work closely with the IBR study staff to implement procedures for collecting and scoring data from participating stakeholders.
2. Develops and maintains a MIS for keeping track of information from the field and of raw data.
3. Tracks these data through processing stages to final computer files for research.
4. Data management – collecting, logging, correcting, editing, tracking, and cleaning – is the programmatic responsibility of his/her team.
5. Proactively organizes on-going data review throughout the course of the study to ensure timely and appropriate identification of errors, trends, discrepancies, and to resolve problems with data flow.
6. Participates in preparing technical reports, quarterly performance reports, Institutional Review Board Protocol Review Requests, and publications of findings.
7. Provides appropriate and timely responses to data requests or queries.
8. Adheres to federal, institutional, and departmental research policies and guidelines.
9. Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Required Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience in data collection, program evaluation, assessment and research, including experience using evaluation and community-based research to inform program development and knowledge of and experience with program evaluation principles, theories, concepts and practices.

 

Preferred Education & Experience:

• Master’s degree.
• Experience in the field regarding public health, particularly HIV and/or substance use disorders; evaluation and research experience; understands and has worked in collaborative research settings

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Knowledge of database management principles and various data architectures, including experience with Microsoft Access.
• Knowledge of descriptive statistics and data cleaning/validation, as well as experience with a statistical package (e.g., SAS, SPSS).
• Ability to explain complex problems both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to effectively delegate activities to obtain desired results.
• Ability to deliver successful outcomes from large scale, long term thematic research projects.
• Ability to design processes for collecting, analyzing, and checking research data.

• Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
• Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
• Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
• Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
• Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.

 

Work Environment:

• Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
• There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.
• The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
• This role is an on campus, in-person position.
