Job Summary:

The Stage Production Artist plays a crucial role in Theatre TCU, providing essential on-campus, in-studio support in overseeing the Scenic Art and Properties Areas. This position will be instrumental in guiding, coordinating, and ensuring the artistic quality of student-driven projects within the Scenic Art and Properties areas. The Stage Production Artist will collaborate closely with student workers and other production staff within the Theatre.

Duties & Essential Job Functions:

1. Collaborates closely with directors, designers, and production teams to determine the artistic requirements and specifications for both scenic art and props.
2. Works alongside student interns to create high-quality paint treatments and props that align with the artistic vision of productions and uphold the department's high standards.
3. Provides guidance, training, and feedback to student designers and interns, ensuring their effective participation in scenic art and prop fabrication.
4. Delegates, coordinates, and oversees tasks effectively to ensure timely completion of scenic art and prop work within production timelines.
5. Assists in the organization and maintenance of prop/paint inventories, ensuring proper storage, maintenance, and repair.
6. Collaborates with other production departments, including scenic design, lighting, and sound, to ensure the seamless integration of scenic elements and props into overall productions.
7. Stays current with industry trends, techniques, and materials
8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

• Associate's degree or equivalent in experience.
• Experience working in an art studio, theater production department, or other related environment

Preferred Education & Experience:

• Experience in managing and supervising a team, particularly one comprised of students with limited experience
• Experience working in an educational theater setting

Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training:

• Valid Texas Driver’s License.
• Must be insurable under the university motor vehicle requirements.
• Satisfactory results from a post-offer physical examination.

Preferred Licensure, Certification, and/or Specialized Training:

• None

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Proficiency in basic fabrication techniques & scenic paint
• Excellent time management skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure to meet production deadlines
• Attention to detail and a commitment to achieving high-quality fabrication of Scenic/Prop elements
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of collaborators
• Flexibility and adaptability to work in a fast-paced and ever-changing theater environment
• Knowledge of theater safety practices and the ability to ensure a safe working environment for the team
• Proficiency in resourceful problem-solving/crafting innovative solutions from materials on hand
• Strong research skills with the ability to conduct historical research to inform prop fabrication &/or paint execution
• Skill and interest in prototyping/problem-solving
• Interest in introducing a diverse range of students with varying degrees of experience to the craft of prop fabrication & scenic art
• Proficiency in using design software or computer-aided design (CAD) tools for prop visualization (the department works primarily in Vectorworks and Sketchup)

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):

• Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
• Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
• Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
• Manual dexterity for crafting, painting, standing and reaching, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling, climbing ladders and stairs, and prolonged standing
• Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 50 lbs. Ability to lift heavier objects (~60lbs) with assistance.

Work Environment:

• Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
• There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.
• The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
• This role is an on campus, in-person position.
